Our Average Share Calculator Tells You Your Average Share Price in Mere Seconds!
Have you ever bought a stock multiple times at different prices? Most of the time, the price you paid for the stock isn't the first price or the last price. It is generally in the middle. Our average share calculator tells you just that. It saves you the trouble of calculating the average by yourself.
The average share calculator also gives you the total quantity, total value, profit/loss and the percentage return. To use the calculator, you just have to input each purchase and the share's market price.
How to Calculate Average Share Price
Average price is calculated by dividing the total amount invested by the total number of shares purchased.
Because more weight can be attributed to a purchase of 100 shares as opposed to a purchase of 10, this calculation is considered to be a weighted average.
Example
You purchase a stock in two rounds:
Average Price = ₹25,000 ÷ 150 = ₹166.67
Now let's say the stock is currently trading at ₹180. Your holdings are worth 150 x 180 = ₹27,000. Your return against the ₹25,000 invested is a profit of ₹2,000, or an 8% return. Play around with the calculator to see the results for yourself.

What is Averaging Down and Averaging Up?
Averaging down occurs when you buy a stock that has recently declined in price. The decline reduces your average cost, meaning you'll start to break even at a lower price. For example, if you own 100 shares of Stock ABC at ₹500 each, and the stock price falls to ₹400, and you purchase 100 shares at that price, your average cost would be ₹450. At that point, the stock price would only need to rise to ₹450 to break even.
Averaging up occurs when you purchase a stock at a rising price, which would also increase your average cost. A rising price means the stock is moving in your favor, and therefore a higher average cost is usually warranted.
Averaging down and up are very common strategies, and our calculator allows you to test the figures to see your break-even point before placing a new order.
What are the Benefits of Using a Share Average Calculator?
- Know your break-even point. You'll be able to easily see the price at which you will stop losing money.
- Plan your next purchase. You can see what the average cost will be if you were to purchase more of the stock at the current price.
- Easily input multiple buys. You can easily add multiple buys if you need to.
- Save time and reduce errors. Manually calculating averages can be very tedious and time consuming, especially if you have a lot of shares to calculate.
Averaging Down
Averaging down is a strategy used to lower the cost of an average stock. From an investor perspective, averaging down is a positive thing. However, averaging down does not always result in a positive outcome. In fact, it can lead to further losses if the stock continues to fall. That's why it is important to assess the company and evaluate the financials to ensure the risk limit has not been reached prior to averaging down.
This calculator uses the price and quantity of each purchase to find the average share price. It does not take into account brokerage, STT, GST, stamp duty, or other charges. Therefore, the actual break-even price may be slightly more. To get a precise number, you can contact your broker for your latest statement or add the fees yourself.
What is the Average Share Price?
To find the average share price, take the total amount invested and divide it by the total number of shares bought.
