What is a Dividend Yield Calculator?
A dividend yield calculator is a simple stock market tool that helps investors calculate the dividend yield of a company based on its current share price and annual dividend per share.
Dividend yield shows how much dividend income a stock provides compared with its current market price. It is commonly used by investors when comparing dividend-paying stocks.
How to Calculate Dividend Yield?
The dividend yield formula is simple. Divide the annual dividend per share by the current market price per share and multiply the result by 100.
For example, suppose a company has a current share price of ₹200 and pays an annual dividend of ₹10 per share.
This means the stock has a dividend yield of approximately 5% based on the current market price.
How Does Our Dividend Yield Calculator Work?
Enter the current share price and annual dividend per share. If you also enter the number of shares, the calculator will estimate your annual dividend income.
1. Current Share Price
Enter the current market price of the stock. Dividend yield generally changes when the market price changes.
2. Annual Dividend Per Share
Enter the total dividend paid for one share during the year. If a company pays dividends multiple times during a year, add the individual payments together.
3. Number of Shares
Enter your number of shares to calculate the estimated annual dividend income.
4. Purchase Price Per Share
This field is optional. It can help you calculate the dividend yield based on your original purchase price rather than the current market price.
Dividend Yield vs Dividend Income
Dividend yield and dividend income are related but different concepts.
- Dividend Yield: Percentage return represented by the annual dividend compared with the stock price.
- Dividend Income: The actual amount of dividend money you may receive based on the number of shares you own.
Why is Dividend Yield Important?
Dividend yield can help investors understand the income component of a dividend-paying stock. It can also be useful when comparing companies within similar industries.
However, dividend yield should not be considered alone. Investors may also review dividend history, earnings, cash flow, payout ratio, debt, business performance and the sustainability of future dividends.
What Happens to Dividend Yield When Share Price Changes?
Dividend yield and share price generally move in opposite directions when the dividend per share remains unchanged.
For example, if a company pays ₹10 annual dividend per share:
- At ₹200 share price, dividend yield = 5%
- At ₹250 share price, dividend yield = 4%
- At ₹100 share price, dividend yield = 10%
This is why a very high dividend yield does not automatically mean a stock is a better investment. A falling share price can increase the displayed dividend yield.
